P V Sindhu, Sakshi Malik received only 1.66% of total amount spent on Rio-bound athletes

  • Rio Olympics medal winners P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malikreceived only 1.66 per cent, for their preparation for the international sporting event, of the Rs 36.85 crore spent by the government.
  • 117 Olympians who took part under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) launched last year.
  • Under TOPS, the government spent Rs 61.13 lakh on Sindhu and Malik, the report added.
  • According to the report, of the total amount under TOPS, Rs 6.36 crore was spent on disciplines – badminton (Rs 3.84 crore) and wrestling (Rs 2.52 crore) – that did net India medals.
  •  45.27 lakh went to badminton silver medal-winner Sindhu and Rs 15.86 lakh to wrestling bronze medal-winner  Sakshi.

Google’s DeepMind creates AI that replicates human speech

  • Google has jumped on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) bandwagon and feels that the technology could have many positive implications.
  • In fact, the technology giants are one of the pioneers in AI software.
  • Company played a part in creating chat bots, a poetry writing software and even created a killswitch in case AI goes rogue.
  •  With current robotic speech, technology is pretty easy to distinguish between a human being and a Text-to-Speech system. But that may change, thanks to a new innovative technology created by a Google’s Deep Mind team called WaveNet.
  • Technology boasts a 50 percent improvement compared to current Technology.

Ratan Tata invests in food-tech start-up IdeaChakki

  • Funds to be used for expansion into new geography along with building the in-house team and strengthening technology.
  • Idea Chakki, a food-tech venture, has raised money from Ratan Tata.
  • The Delhi-based start-up, however, did not disclose the quantum raised. The company also partnered with Enablers for their next round of funding.
  • Idea Chakki has been founded by Monica Narula, Noopur Tiwari and Gunjan Mehrish — three former NDTV executive swith over 20 years of television experience.
  • Currently targeting premium restaurants in Delhi NCR, the start-up aims to expand its operations in the country and plans to set up its first international office in Paris.

Wrestler Sakshi Malik enters top-5 in world rankings

  • Sakshi Malik entered the top-five in the latest UWW (United World Wrestling) rankings, rising to a career-best 4th position in women’s 58kg category
  •  Previously unranked, Sakshi, who became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, claimed the position in the latest list
  •  Another Indian woman wrestler – Vinesh Phogat – who made an exit in the quarterfinals
  • After a knee injury during the Olympics, climbed up two places to 11th position in the 48kg category

China, Russia to stage military drills in South China Sea

  • China and Russia were to start war games in the South China Sea on Monday, Beijing’s defence ministry said.
  • In a show of force after an international tribunal invalidated the Asian giant’s extensive claims in the area.
  • Eight-day joint exercises will include a focus on “seizing and controlling” islands and shoals.
  • Chinese navy spokesman Liang Yang said in a statement.
  • They will involve surface ships, submarines, fixed-wing aircraft, ship-borne helicopters, marine corps and amphibious armoured equipment from both navies.

Delhi To Jaipur In 2 Hours With New Highway, Says Nitin Gadkari

  • Gadkari said land acquisition for this new highway will begin soon.
  • New highway will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 16,000 Crore.
  • Work on the highway will start from January 2017.
  • New access control highway between Delhi and Jaipur will enable the commuters to cover the distance of 270 km between the two cities in just two hours.
  • Mr Gadkari said that land acquisition for this new highway will begin soon and suggested that Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar should promote development along both sides of this highway so as to bring down the cost.
