1.India ranked 131 in human development

  • India has been ranked 131st among 188 countries in the UN Development Programme (UNDP)’s 2016 ‘Human Development.
  • It is third among South Asian countries (behind Sri Lanka and Maldives) and comes under the medium human development category.
  • The improvement in India’s HDI value is second among BRICS countries with China recording the highest improvement of 48 percent.


2.World Water Day

  • World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on 22 March.
  • The day focuses attention on the importance of universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries.[
  • Each year, UN-Water highlights one aspect of the importance of freshwater, through a theme selected for the day.
  • Theme for 2017 is -‘Why waste water?’.


3.Vidya wins silver in Women world Snooker

  • India’s Vidya Pillai produced a spirited performance before settling for silver in the World Women Snooker Championship in Singapore.
  • Vidya defeated by Ng On Yee (Hong Kong) in the final,
  • Vidya settled for silver, securing the first international medal for India in 2017.


4.ISRO commissions two facilities at VSSC

  • ISRO commissioned two facilities- a Hypersonic Wind Tunnel and Shock Tunnel- at the VSSC at Thiruvananthapuram as part of its continuous and concerted efforts to minimise cost of access to space.
  • The1 meter Hypersonic Wind Tunnel and one meter Shock Tunnel have been established with a wide spectrum of simulation capabilities in terms of Mach number, Reynolds number and re-entry velocities.


5.“Kahin Bhi-Kabhi Bhi” medical services

  • Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched the “Kahin Bhi-Kabhi Bhi” medical services for ESIC beneficiaries of Delhi/Noida on a pilot basis in Nov, 2016.
  • Under scheme Insured Persons and their families may seek primary medical care services.
  • ESI Corporation intends to extend such medical services in other parts of the country depending on the outcome of above pilot project.


6.HIV and AIDS (Prevention & Control) Bill

  • A crucial bill to ensure equal rights to people afflicted with HIV and AIDS in getting treatment, admission in educational institutions and jobs, was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
  • The Rajya Sabha passed the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2014.
  • The bill seeks to assure treatment to patients without stigmatising them.


7.Jadeja tops ICC’s test bowlers rankings

  • Ravindra Jadeja tops the ICC’s test bowlers rankings leaving behind spin twin Ravichandran Ashwin in the latest list of bowlers.
  • Left-arm spinner Jadeja moves past Ashwin after the nine wickets haul in the drawn third Test against Australia at Ranchi.
  • Cheteshwar Pujara gets career-high second rank among test batsman.


8.Vikalp Scheme

  • Named ‘Vikalp’ or alternative, the scheme aims to utilise vacant berths in many premier trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto etc. in all major routes.
  • On April 1, the Indian Railways is launching a new scheme under which passengers put on waiting lists can get confirmed berths in the next alternative train.
  • Passengers will not be charged anything extra for the difference of fare.


9.Cauvery water dispute

  • The SC said it will commence on July 11 the final hearing of the appeals filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal on sharing of water for 15 consecutive workings days.
  • On October 18, last year the apex court had directed Karnataka to keep releasing 2000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till further orders.


10.India’s first sign language dictionary

  • The govt is all set to come up with the country’s first-of-its-kind dictionary which aims to bring uniformity in sign languages used by hearing and speech impaired people across the nation.
  • The Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary, which is being developed by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC).
  • The dictionary is being developed in both print and video format.

1. ONGC May Acquire Hindustan Petroleum

  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) may acquire India’s third-biggest fuel retailer HPCL in an about Rs. 44,000 crore ($6.6 billion) deal.
  • The merger is seen as a part of the government’s plan to create an integrated oil giant.
  • There are only 6 major companies in the sector – ONGC, Oil India Ltd, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), HPCL, BPCL and GAIL.

2. RIL market cap crosses Rs4 trillion

  • India’s biggest company by revenue, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), on Monday crossed Rs 4 trillion in market capitalisation.
  • RIL is the second company after Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) to cross Rs4 trillion in market cap.
  • Currently, TCS has a total market cap of Rs 4.88 trillion.
  • Last time, the company was seen achieving this milestone on 18 January 2008.

3. Oscar Awards for 2016 announced

  • The Oscar for best actor goes to Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea.
  • The Best Original Song goes to City Of Stars, La La Land.
  • The Best Animated Feature Film Oscar goes to Zootopia.
  • Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra made her second Oscars appearance. She was a presenter last year.

4. India, China seek common ground on Afghanistan

  • Despite differences on a number of issues, including over the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), U.N. designation of Masood Azhar as a terrorist, and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
  • India and China have begun to look for a “common ground” on Afghanistan during Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar’s visit to Beijing last week.
  • Officials reportedly even discussed the possibility of “joint development projects” that could be undertaken despite economic rivalries between the two countries in other parts of the subcontinent.

5. Spacecraft to fly near the Sun next year

  • NASA plans to send its first robotic spacecraft to the Sun next year. The spacecraft is slated to get within six million kilometres of the blazing star to probe its atmosphere.
  • Humans have sent spacecraft to the Moon, Mars and even distant interstellar space. Now, NASA plans to launch the Solar Probe Plus mission to the Sun which is about 149 million kilometres from the Earth.

6. World’s first robot table tennis tutor sets Guinness record

  • The world’s first robot table tennis tutor FORPHEUS in Japan has set a new Guinness World Record for its uncanny ability to be able to play the game better than most humans.
  • FORPHEUS (Future Omron Robotics Technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonised Automation with Sinic Theoretics) has officially been given the Guinness title for its unique technological intelligence and educational capabilities.

7. Top focus to be laid on expanding network in Odisha: Railways

  • The Railways said the top focus will be laid on expanding rail network in Odisha, while priority will be to link unconnected areas of the state and improve connectivity to ports.
  • This was announced by Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain reviewed the performance and progress of ongoing Railway projects with General Manager, East Coast Railway, Umesh Singh and other officials during a visit here.

8. Govt to bring new hydro policy next fiscal: Power Secretary

  • The government will bring out a new policy for the hydropower sector next fiscal to boost this clean source of energy, a senior official said.
  • “We are working on a New Hydro Policy for quite sometimes. We will do bring it next fiscal,” Power Secretary P K Pujari told reporters at a TERI event here.
  • The new policy also seeks to bring large hydro projects at par with smaller ones in terms of availing various benefits.

9. Nokia Launched World’s First 5G Smartphone.

Mobile company Nokia come back with World’s First 5G Smartphone at MWC 2017. The company also launched an upgraded version of its popular handset Nokia 3310. After 17 years from his original launch.

1. India, Bangladesh ink MoU for development of Sylhet city

  • India and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the sustainable development of Sylhet city with financial aid from India. Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Sylhet City Corporation CEO Enamul Habib signed the tripartite agreement in Sylhet, a metropolitan city in northeastern Bangladesh.
  • Under the MoU, three projects are considered i.e construction of a five-storeyed Kindergarten & High School Building, a six-storeyed Cleaner Colony Building and Development of Dhupia Dighipar area -will be implemented with Taka 24.28 crore.

2. Pooja Ghatkar clinches bronze

  • In International Shooting Sport Federation, Indian shooter Pooja Ghatkar secured India’s first medal in New Delhi.
  • She finished third in the 10m Air Rifle event. Ghatkar clinched bronze medal with a score of 228.8 in the final round.
  • China’s Mengyao Shi secured gold with a score of 252.1 – setting a new world record in the event.
  • The silver went to China’s Lijie Dong for a score of 248.9.

3. Rajasthan 2nd largest crude oil producer in country

  • Rajasthan has become the second largest crude oil producer in the country after the offshore field Bombay High.
  • Mr. Kalyan Singh, Governor of Rajasthan stated that oilfields in the state were producing nearly 90 lakh tones oil annually, which is 24% of the total domestic crude oil production.

4. AYUSH Minister to inaugurate the World Integrated Medicine Forum on Regulation of Homeopathic Medicine

  • The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH, Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the World Integrated Medicine Forum on Regulation of Homeopathic Medicinal Products- National and Global strategies in New Delhi.
  • The two-day event that concluded was organised by Ministry of AYUSH and Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH).
  • iii. The first-of-its-kind forum is expected to increase the perception of the international world towards India as a key player in the progress of the homoeopathy drug industry.

5. Government ropes in Shilpa Shetty as Swachh Bharat brand ambassador

  • The government has roped in actress Shilpa Shetty as a brand ambassador for the Indian government’s cleanliness initiative Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • She will feature in TV and radio campaigns aimed at discouraging people from littering on roads.


6. International Hockey Federation awards

  • Belgium skipper John-John Dohmen and Netherlands’ Naomi van As were adjudged the international hockey federation male & female Player of the Year.
  • There were 2 Indians in the fray with Sreejesh among nominees for the best goalkeeper while 20-year-old Harmanpreet Singh, who was part of the junior World Cup-winning squad, a nominee of ‘Rising Star of the Year’ category.

7. Indian Railways unveils Antyodaya Exp.

  • Indian Railways has unveiled Antyodaya Express, a new train for the unreserved passengers. It was unveiled by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi’s Safdarjung station.
  • The first Antyodaya Express is slated to start between Mumbai and Tatanagar (Jharkhand) and second between Ernakulam and Howrah.
  • The facilities provided in Antyodaya coaches are similar in first class coaches.

8. Oriental Bank Ties Up With Chola MS

  • Haryana-based Oriental Bank of Commerce has signed a corporate agency agreement with Chennai-based general insurance provider Cholamandalam General Insurance Company for distribution of insurance products.
  • The insurance products include motor, health, home and travel.
  • Chola MS will offer a wide range of non-life insurance products to customers of Oriental Bank through its branches.

1. 9th BRICS Summit

  • BRICS is the acronym  for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
  • China will host the first BRICS Sherpas Meeting in Nanjing in the country’s Jiangsu Province.
  • The 9th BRICS Summit will be held in China’s Xiamen city from September 3-5.
  • The theme of this year’s event is ‘BRICS  Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future.

2. India to host Combined World Cup for shooting in 2019

  • India will be hosting the Combined World Cup for shooting in 2019, a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will further boost the country’s profile as a global shooting destination.
  • The National Rifle Association of India’s (NRAI) bid was approved by the International Shooting Sport Federation’s Executive Board in its meeting held in New Delhi.

3. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan


  • Five more states– Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Mizoram and Uttrakhand– are likely to be declared defection free (ODF) in next 6 months.
  • As of now, three states, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim, had declared themselves ODF under the clean India mission Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
  • The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was officially launched on 2 October 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

4. International conference on ‘Bharat Bodh

  • The President of India inaugurated an international conference on ‘Bharat Bodh’ (Idea of Bharat) organized by the IGNOU and Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal on Feb 23, 2017 in New Delhi.
  • He added that Bharat has always been recognised “as the storehouse of knowledge and discovery – knowledge which liberates, and discovery which fathoms the deepest thoughts of humanity and co-existence.

5. TCS emerges as third most valued IT brand

  • Ata Consultancy Services, today announced that it has broken into the list of the Top 3 most valuable brands in the IT Services industry, in an assessment done by Brand Finance, the world’s leading brand valuation firm.
  • “Just five years ago the TCS brand had achieved a major milestone, emerging as one of the big four brands in the IT Services sector.

6. Centre sets up fund for POSCO victims

  • Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, has decided to set up a POCSO Victims Compensation Fund to provide financial help to minors who are victims of sexual abuse.
  • This fund will draw financial resources from the Nirbhaya Fund.
  • Gandhi made the announcement after she ordered financial assistance by way of a compensation of Rs 3 lakh for treatment of a 3 year old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted and found abandoned at a railway station in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra.

7. SRM’s Next Tech Lab team wins Hackathon

  • A three-member team of Next Tech Lab, SRM University, won the IESA Hackathon-Vision Summit 2017, a note said.
  • The 30-hour hackathon that was organised by Intel at Bengaluru from February 21- 22. Swaroop Belur, Akash Jain and Suresh Kumar prototyped a Smart Industrial Failure Detection System and won Rs. 1 lakh.

8. Aerospace team to visit Australia

  • The Aerospace Industry Development Association of Tamil Nadu and the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries will organise the visit of a 20-member Indian aerospace delegation to Australia during February 28 March
  • The delegation is scheduled to participate at Avalon 2017.


9. Sikkim becomes 22nd State to join UDAY

  • The GOI and the State of Sikkim signed an MOU under the Scheme Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) for operational improvement of the State’s Power Distribution Department.
  • With the signing of MoU, the total number of States covered under UDAY has reached 22.
  • UDAY is the financial turnaround and revival package for electricity distribution companies of India initiated by the GOI.

1. Cabinet approvals MoU between India and Australia

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing of a MoU between India and Australia for promotion and development of cooperation in civil aviation security.
  •  The MoU will provide an opportunity to Indian aviation security authorities to share the expertise of their Australian counterparts and enhance the overall aviation security environment in India.


2. India’s GDP projected to slow to 6.6% due to demonetization Strains: IMF

  • India’s growth is projected to slow to 6.6% in 2016-17 fiscal due to the strains that have emerged in the economy as a result of temporary disruptions caused by demonetization.
  • The post-November 8, 2016, cash shortages and payment disruptions caused by the currency exchange initiative have undermined consumption and business activity, posing a new challenge to sustaining the growth momentum. India’s economy grew at 7.6% in 2015-16.

3. Govt doubles maternity leave for women workers in industries

  • The government has allowed women working in industries to take six months maternity leave pre-empting parliamentary approval on the maternity benefit amendment bill that is pending in the Lok Sabha.
  • Through an executive order, the labour and employment ministry has doubled maternity leave to six months from three for industrial women workers.
  • This means about 9 million women working across various industries will get the benefit.

4. Nasscom signs MoU with ITAC Japan

  • The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the IoT Acceleration Consortium (ITAC) Japan.
  • To collaborate to address digital technology shifts and accelerate IoT (Internet of Things) adoption at a global level across the industry.


5. Agreement between India and Poland

  • An agreement between India and Poland has been signed on cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
  • The agreement covers various activities in the field of agriculture and allied sector.
  • It provides for constitution of a Joint Working Group (JWG) comprising of representatives from both countries.


6. Air Service agreement between  India & Greece

  • PM Shri Narendra Modi has approved the signing of Air Services Agreement between India and Greece.
  • An agreement has the potential to spur greater trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries bringing it in tune with the developments in the civil aviation sector.
  • It will provide enabling an environment for enhanced and seamless connectivity.


7. Book on Judicial Reforms

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated book named ‘Judicial Reforms – Recent Global Trends’ (February 22, 2017) at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The book ‘Judicial Reforms – Recent Global Trends’ brought out by the India International Law Foundation is the outcome of a Seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Judicial Reforms: A Global Perspective’ held in January 2013 in New Delhi.


8. India win ‘Handball-on-skates’ World Championship

  • India won the men’s Roll Ball World Cup Championship as they beat Iran 8-7 in the final on 22 Feb 2017.
  • India also won the tournament in the women’s category, defeating Iran 6-4 in the final.
  • Roll Ball is a combination of roller-skating, handball, and basketball, and it was invented by an Indian sports teacher Raju Dabhade in 2003.


9. India, Israel to develop missile for Army

  • Ahead of the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Israel later this year, India has approved a deal to develop jointly a medium-range surface-to-air missile (MR-SAM) system for the Army in a Rs. 17,000-crore deal.
  • This is the latest in a series of other variants of SAM systems for the Navy and the Air Force being jointly developed with Israeli help under deals estimated at billions of dollars.

1. Delhi to get India’s first heliport

  • The first heliport in India will be inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju in North Delhi on (28 February 2017).
  • The heliport, built by state-owned Pawan Hans, consists of a terminal building, nine parking bays and four hangars with a parking capacity of 16 helicopters. It was built at an investment of ₹100 crore

2. Government launches ‘Cyber Swachhta Kendra’ to protect citizens

  • At a time when cyber-attacks are increasing Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad launched Cyber Swachhta Kendra in New Delhi for Botnet cleaning and Malware analysis as a part of digital India initiative.
  • He also launched two mobile apps. M Kovach to protect smartphones and tablets from hackers. Samvid to protect Desktops from suspicious applications from running.

3. MoU signed for welfare of Handicraft Artisans belonging to Scheduled Castes

  • Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have come together to step up interventions for the economic development of an estimated 12 lakh scheduled caste artisans.
  • An MoU was signed between Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles and National Scheduled Castes Finance and Development Corporation (NSFDC) with the objective of working together to improve the earnings of artisans across the country, belonging to Scheduled Castes categories.

4. 7 Earth-like planets spotted

  • Scientists have spotted seven Earth-sized planets, with a mass similar to Earth, orbiting around a dwarf star the size of Jupiter, just 39 light years from the Sun.
  • In May last year, scientists found three planets passing in front of TRAPPIST-1, the dwarf star.
  • Based on further monitoring of the star from the ground and space, scientists have found four more ‘exo-planets’ orbiting TRAPPIST-1.

5. Haryana CM, confer Bhim Award to 42 sportspersons

  • The Haryana government gave away the Bhim awards to 42 sportspersons of the state, spotting them for their outstanding performance at the national and international fronts between the years 2013 and 2017.
  • The awards were given by the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki ata function held at Haryana Raj Bhawan.
    A total prize money of Rs 2.10 crore was distributed among the 42 sports persons and the awardees would be presented Bhim award.

6. Kashmir to observe 2017 as the ‘Year of Apple’

  • Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti declared 2017 as ‘Year of Apple’ in a major bid to promote the famed Kashmiri apples in domestic and foreign markets.
  • The Chief Minister launched the High Density Apple Plantation Scheme in Srinagar. These high-density plants will be routed through J&K Bank along with the subsidy.

1. Apollo Hospitals Foundation signs agreement with WWF-India

1. Apollo Hospitals Foundation will provide medical support to forest department employees and local communities in the areas where WWF-India operates for conservation.

2. The two organisation have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard. The medicare will be available to over 27,000 staff and people in about 17 states of WWF-India operations.

3. They will be provided with medical treatment, including air ambulance services in critical and emergency conditions.

2. BHIM app sees record 17 million installs: NITI Aayog CEO Kant

1. Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), a mobile app pushed by the government to make digital payments a mass movement in India, has seen over 17 million installs (downloads), a world record, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, has said.

2. The Centre will also soon roll out a cash-back scheme to give further boost to the use of BHIM, Kant told media persons here on 21 Feb 2017.

3. India as the World’s Largest Arms Importer in the Last Four Years

1. According to a report released by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute India emerged as the world’s largest importer of major arms during 2012-16.As per the report, India accounted for 13% of the global total sales.

2.According to the data in Asia, India increased its arms imports by 43 percent between 2007-11 and 2012-16 which is far greater than the imports by its rivals China and Pakistan.

4. Health Secretary launches ‘SAATHIYA’ Kit

1. Health and Family Welfare launched the SAATHIYA Resource Kit including ‘Saathiya Salah’ Mobile App for adolescents.

2. This is a part of the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) program.

3. One of the key interventions under the programme is introduction of the Peer Educators who act as a catalyst for generating demand for the adolescent health services & imparting age appropriate knowledge.

5. India, Japan ink pact on rail safety


1. India signed an agreement with Japan last week on enhancing railway safety in the Indian Railways with focus on railway track and rolling stock safety, a press statement said on 21 Feb 2017.

2. The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed here on February 17 between Railway Board Chairman A.K.Mittal and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan Vice-Minister Hiroshi Tabata.

6. EDII wins International Mercury Award

1. Ahmedabad-based EDII, an acknowledged national resource institute for entrepreneurship education, research, training and institution-building, has received the prestigious International Mercury Awards for the year 2016-17.

2. International Mercury Awards is the world’s only independent awards org.

3. It is given to honor outstanding achievement in professional communications in around 80 countries

7. Govt may consider imposing import duty on wheat: Paswan

The government may consider imposing import duty on wheat to protect farmers amid projections of a record output this year, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said. On December 8, it had reduced the customs duty on wheat to zero from 10 percent to boost domestic availability and check retail prices.

8. India to link Kathmandu with Delhi, Kolkata by rail

1. India’s Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu announced here that it would soon link Kathmandu to New Delhi and Kolkata using direct railway lines, in a bid to strengthen cross-border connectivity and facilitate movement of people between the two countries.

2. Prabhu, who is here to address the Nepal Infrastructure Summit, said that this could happen as soon as Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for engineering surveys.

1.Anthropological museum on journey of man in the subcontinent opens in Kolkata.

2.A new museum in Kolkata tells the tale of how modern humans in the Indian subcontinent evolved from ancestors who arrived about 12.3 million years ago from Africa, during the Pleistocene era.

3.Set up by the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI), the museum traces the history of human evolution.

2. Coast Guard ship Ayush commissioned

1.Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS AYUSH was commissioned at Kochi, Kerala by Vice Admiral AR Karwe.

2.ICGS AYUSH is the 20th and the last in the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

3.The ship is capable of undertaking multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and medical evacuation.

3. India commits $340m loans to Nepal

5. SpaceX Launches 1st Private Rocket from Historic NASA Pad

1.The California-based company’s Falcon 9 rocket launched a robotic Dragon cargo capsule SpaceX toward the International Space Station from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center – the same pad that once hosted Apollo moon missions and space shuttle launches.

2.It was SpaceX’s  first daytime landing at the site, called Landing Zone 1, at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

6. Bihar Government Prohibits Consuming Liquor

1.The minister has made a new rule, according to which, no officials of the state government are allowed to consume liquor outside the state or country.

2.State’s governor declared an amendment to the Bihar Government Servants’ Conduct Rules 1976 and said the rule was effective immediately.

7. Virat Kohli first Indian sportsperson to ink Rs 100-cr deal with Puma

1.Virat Kohli became the first Indian sports personality to strike a Rs 100-crore endorsement deal with a single brand Kohli signed an eight-year deal with sports apparel brand Puma worth Rs 110 crore.

2.The long-term deal could potentially cover Kohli’s remaining career with the Indian team.

8. Tata Steel’s Katamati Mine wins Best Green Award

1.Tata Steel’s Katamati iron mine has been honoured with the the Best Green Organisation of the Year Award at the Global Green Future Leadership Awards in recognition of its environmental protection measures.

2.The award was presented at a function organised by World CSR Day Katamati iron mine has been engaged in environmental protection efforts for years and has successfully implemented Environmental Management System as per the requirements of ISO 14001:2004.

1. WHO Issues Plans to Combat Zika Virus

  • WHO claimed that $56 million are needed to combat Zika virus. The disease has been linked to severe birth defects in Brazil and has spread to 39 countries.
  • The funds would be used to fast-track vaccines, carry out diagnostics and virus control measures.
  • WHO expects the funds to come from member states and other donors. The UN had declared the Zika outbreak, a global public health emergency on Feb 1.

5. AirAsia signs MoU with Odisha Government for two-ways Direct Flights

  • Malaysia-based low-cost airline AirAsia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government to start two-way direct international flights from Bhubaneswar to Kuala Lumpur.
  • The agreement was signed between Nitin Bhanudas Jawale, Director of Tourism  AirAsia signs MoU with Odisha Government for two-ways Direct FlightsDepartment in Odisha and AirAsia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Aireen Omar. The airline will begin its flight service from the Biju Patnaik International Airport by end of March 2017.

6. ISRO successfully tests its indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage engine for GSLV Mark III rocket

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully ground tested its indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage engine for GSLV Mark III at its Liquid Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in Thirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
  • The C25 stage is the most powerful upper stage developed by ISRO and uses Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen propellant combination. The development of C25 cryogenic stage will provide ISRO capability to launch four ton class satellites in Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

7. NALCO signs MoU with TERI for sustainable rehabilitation

  • Odisha-based National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi.
  • The objective of the agreement is to Scientific, technological and educational activities in the area of mining rehabilitation. The agreement will further strengthen initiatives being undertaken under Sustainable Development Framework (SDF).

8. PV Sindhu Attains Career-Best Rank at No. 5 in BWF Rankings, Saina Placed at No. 9

  • Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu achieved her career best Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s single ranking by being placed at 5th spot Previously the top seeded player was placed at sixth position.
  • The only second Indian to be placed among the top 10 spots is Saina Nehwal who has  PV Sindhu been placed at No. 9.

1. Vikas Swarup is the new India’s High Commissioner in Canada.

Ministry of External Affairs appointed Vikas Swarup as the Indian High Commissioner to Canada. He is the Senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and noted novelist of Slumdog Millionaire. He will be on the place of Arun Kumar Sahu who is currently working as acting Indian High Commissioner to Canada.

2. Racket in the name of PM’s scheme busted

The U.P. police have busted a racket, involving a gang of seven women duping people in Muzaffarnagar in the name of enrolling them for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship initiative Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP). Police said the women lured lower middle-class parents to get their daughters ‘registered’ with the promise of monetary returns , when no cash is offered under BBBP.

3. HAL, Saab sign MoU for transfer of technology

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) had a busy day on 17th Feb 2017, with three major memorandums of understanding (MoUs) or contracts being signed.
  • The largest of the contracts was between the avionics division of HAL and the South African subsidiary of the Swedish defence firm Saab for transfer of technology.
  • The contract is worth $8.5 mn, which will see the transfer of technology for in country maintenance of Saab’s Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS), which is the electronic warfare self-protection system for HAL’s advanced light helicopter Dhruv.

4. Shri Radha Mohan Singh Inaugurated 2017 Indian Seed Congress in Kolkata

  • The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated the Indian Seed Congress 2017 in Kolkata. The theme of Seed Congress is “Seed of Joy”.2017 Indian Seed Congress in Kolkata.

An Indian-origin Scotland Yard officer Shand Panesar along with his colleague Craig Nicholson was honored with the 2017 Outstanding Bravery of the Year Award in central London during a special award ceremony of the Total Excellence in Policing Awards.

6. AIIMS, New Delhi Wins First Prize for Sanitation & Hygiene under Kayakalp Awards

  • India’s premier health institute the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi was awarded the first prize of the Government’s Kayakalp Award under the Central Government Hospitals category in New Delhi for maintaining high standards of sanitation and hygiene.
  • The award was presented by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri J P Nadda and the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi received a cash prize of Rs. 5 crore.

7. Indian Railways Wins National Chess Championship

  • Indian Railways has won The 36th National Chess Team Championship.
  • This is their 1st championship title and it was held at Bhubaneswar.
  • Indian Railway team beat its counterparts, viz. Odisha, Gujrat, Air-India, AAI, TN, and Delhi.
  • Lastly, Indian Railway ousted Life Insurance Corporation.
  • Railway team consisted of five Chess players from different Zonal Railways.

8. Sindh Assembly Approves Hindu Marriage Bill

  • Sindh Assembly, Pakistan passed the Hindu Marriage Bill 2016.
  • It became the first assembly in Pakistan to do so.
  • It will provide mechanism for formally registering Hindu marriages in Sindh.
  • Bill was moved by Sindh Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro.
  • The law can be applied retroactively to existing marriages.
